Liverpool's search for Jürgen Klopp's successor continues.

Liverpool's search for Jürgen Klopp's successor continues.

On July 25, The Athletic reported that Liverpool have made an offer for Arne Slott, but have received a rejection from Feyenoord. Liverpool reportedly offered £8 million in compensation, but Feyenoord didn't even bat an eye.

Klopp, who ushered in a new era of glory for Liverpool, has announced his resignation. “Jurgen Klopp has informed the club of his intention to step down as manager at the end of the season,” Liverpool said on its website in January. In an interview with the club, Klopp cited “exhaustion of energy” as the reason for his abrupt departure after this season. Klopp's existing contract with Liverpool runs until 2026. “I don't have any problems now,” Klopp said, “but I know that I can't continue, continue, continue, continue to do this job,” he added. Klopp had reportedly been communicating his desire to leave the club since November of last year.

Klopp has been Liverpool's savior. Since his arrival at Liverpool in October 2015, Klopp has ushered in a new era for the Reds. After falling from league title contention in the mid-2010s to Europa League qualification, Liverpool rebounded under Klopp. After winning the European Champions League in 2018-2019, the Reds went on to win their first league title in 30 years the following season. Klopp went down in Liverpool history as the only manager to win the league, UCL, FA Cup, and League Cup.

The Reds need to find a new manager immediately to lead the team starting next season. Their first choice is Xabi Alonso, the “next big thing” who led Leverkusen to the title. Alonso also played for Liverpool. Liverpool contacted Alonso, but he decided to stay at Leverkusen. Leverkusen announced Alonso's departure on their official website last month. “Leverkusen is the right place for me to develop as a coach,” Alonso said, “I have a good feeling as a young coach. My work here is not finished yet,” he emphasized.

“I'm helping the players and the team. I want to help the players and the team, especially the young players,” he added, ‘and if I am part of that process, I am happy with that.’ “I have shared this with the club officials who have respected me since I decided to stay,” Alonso said, emphasizing that “everything is clear now, and we have two months left to fight for the title with a full tank of gas.” According to local media, Alonso reportedly informed the players of his decision to stay ahead of the press conference. Bayern Munich, who were as keen on Alonso as Liverpool, were also in the running.

The Reds have been linked with Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann. Most recently, the Reds have been strongly linked with the 'young Portuguese mastermind' who ushered in Sporting's glory days. At just 39 years old, Amorim made waves in 2021 when he led Sporting to their first title in 19 years. With his aggressive style, Amorim is considered the next great Portuguese coach. This season, he has led Sporting to the top of the league.

Another candidate has also emerged. Arne Slott, the coach of Feyenoord, has been called the Dutch Guardiola. Slott got his start in coaching in 2019 when he took charge of Alkmaar and led them to a runner-up finish in his first year in charge, before moving to Feyenoord in 2021. After finishing runner-up in the Europa Conference in his first year, he led Feyenoord to the top of the league for the first time in six years. He also lifted the KNVB Cup this season. The Dutchman is making waves with his bold attacking style of soccer. Slott has also been heavily linked with Tottenham before the appointment of Enze Postecoglou. At the time, Slott had expressed his desire to join Spurs, but he decided to stay at Feyenoord.

On April 24, Fabrizio Romano, one of the foremost authorities on the European transfer market, reported on social media that Liverpool had made contact with Slott. Sky Sports also reported that 'Liverpool have begun to consider Slott, who has been linked with Tottenham as their next manager'. Then came the actual Liverpool move. The Reds are likely to make an additional bid, according to Deutsche Athletik. For now, the Reds seem to be leaning toward Slott.
