Figure Shinjia takes 1st place in short at Junior World Championships

Figure skating standout Shin Jia (ROK) topped the women's short program at the Junior World Championships with a personal best, becoming the first South Korean skater to do so in 18 years after Kim Yeon-ah.

Shin finished first in the women's single short program at the 2024 International Ice Skating Union (ISU) Figure Skating Junior World Championships with a technical score of 41.31, artistic score of 32.17 and a total score of 73.48 at Taipei Arena in Taipei, Taiwan, today (28 February).

Shin surpassed her personal best in the short program (71.19), which she set at this event in March last year, to take a 0.88-point lead over her younger rival Mao Shimada (JPN).

Shin will look to become the first South Korean skater in 18 years to win a junior world championship gold medal since Kim Yeon-ah in 2006 when she competes in the free skate on February 1.

Shin has won the women's singles silver medal at the event two years in a row, in 2022 and last year.

Shin failed to break Shimada's barrier at the 2022-2023 Junior Grand Prix 토토사이트 Finals, last year's World Championships, the 2023-2024 Junior Grand Prix Finals and last month's Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

Shinjia, who was the 46th skater to step onto the silver plate after Shimada, got off to a great start with a perfect first jump, a triple flip-triple toe loop combination jump.

Landing the subsequent double axel cleanly, Shinjia further boosted her score by executing a flying sit spin at the highest level of difficulty, Level 4.

Competing alongside Shin Jia, twin sisters Kim Yoo-sung and Kim Yoo-jae (both of Pyongchon, South Korea) finished ninth (59.58 points) and 18th (54.98 points), respectively, to qualify for the short program, which is open to the top 24 skaters.

The women's singles free skating will take place on February 1 at 6:45 p.m. KST.
